In practice
- ANSI Type II means a soak test: four hours in water, nineteen hours drying at 49 degrees, three cycles, without the joint delaminating. It does not mean waterproof.
- The low pH of 3.0 can attack metal surfaces. Keep clamps and jigs clean.
- One of the shortest open times in the range. For many-part glue-ups reach for Extend instead.
- A note on classification: Franklin states only the ANSI/HPVA class for this line. The EN 204 D classes common in the trade do not come from the manufacturer.
- Joints that are meant to be opened again later take a glue whose joint can be released with water and warmth: hide glue or Titebond Original. Titebond II and III are not water-soluble once cured; such joints are opened with a hot air gun and careful pressure.
- Squeezed-out PVA seals the pores. Stain no longer penetrates there and leaves light patches. So do not wipe it wet: let it skin over and pare it off with a chisel.
- Clamping pressure by wood hardness: around 100 to 150 psi for softwood, 125 to 175 psi for medium, 175 to 250 psi for hardwood.
Technology and workmanship
Titebond wood glues come from Franklin International in Ohio, USA, and C.A. Götz jr. GmbH distributes them in Europe. Franklin sets out simple ground rules for working with them: the surfaces are clean, free of grease and dry, the wooden parts fit as closely as possible, the glue is applied generously on wood, and the joint is pressed together under pressure. If the glue has settled in the bottle, shake it well.
Titebond Original, II and III dry completely, without a soft residue in the joint that would absorb vibration. Titebond Original remains water-soluble, and its joint can be opened again with water and warmth. Titebond II and III are not water-soluble once cured; steam does not open these joints.
Titebond II Premium (500) shares the properties of Titebond Original and is also water resistant. Franklin also names outdoor gluing, such as garden furniture or fishing rods, and radio-frequency gluing as fields of use. Once closed, the joint stays under pressure for at least 60 minutes. It is worked above 13 °C (55 °F) and stored at no more than 24 °C.
The open time can be lengthened by thinning with water, for laminating or veneering, for example. The technical data sheet is the same for every container size.
Our experience
Titebond is our main adhesive in string instrument making. For violins we mostly reach for Titebond Original, because its joint can be opened again with water and warmth when a repair is needed later. For oily timber we recommend Titebond III Ultimate with the green label, with a test joint beforehand. With bog oak, which is hard to glue because of its high sulphur and salt content, Titebond III has proved the best of the Titebond glues for us.
When another model suits you better
For dark timbers there is Titebond II in a brown tint (370), with the basic properties of Titebond II Premium.
Frequently asked questions
Is glue in the dispensing cap after shipping a defect?
No, as long as the cap was not pulled open this is normal, because the cap itself seals the bottle.
How do I undo a joint glued with Titebond II or III?
With a hot air gun and careful pressure, or with acetone as a last resort, protecting the surrounding varnish. Steam does not work with these two glues.
Which Titebond glue withstands 200 degrees, for instance at the bending iron?
None of the Titebond wood glues withstands around 200 °C without losing its properties. That temperature lies above the charring point even of Titebond III Ultimate.
Do the container sizes differ technically?
No, the technical data sheet is identical for all containers.
How long is Titebond II Premium clamped?
At least 60 minutes under pressure.
