Thomastik Jazz Swing JS113 Guitar String Set, ST-JS113-SET

ST-JS113-SET

The Thomastik Jazz Swing JS113 is the Medium variant of the legendary flatwound jazz guitar strings.

  • With gauges from .013 to .053, this set offers the most powerful tone in the Jazz Swing family and is especially suited for musicians with a strong attack.
  • The true flatwound of polished nickel on a round core delivers the characteristically warm, full jazz sound with outstanding projection.
  • The thicker strings provide particularly powerful sustain and impressive dynamics on large archtop guitars.

Sound and physics

String gauges are given in thousandths of an inch, for the Jazz Swing JS110 from .010 to .044, for the Jazz Flat Wound JF344 for electric bass from .043 to .100; each gauge carries exactly the mass per metre that pitch and tension on the scale length require.

The plucking point shapes the tone colour: plucked near the bridge more high partials remain and the tone is brighter, towards the middle of the string it becomes rounder.

The wound strings combine a flexible core with a heavy winding so that their overtones stay close to the harmonic series; the higher partials lie only fractionally above the exact multiples of the fundamental. Steel cores bring 7,800 to 8,000 kg/m³ and a modulus of elasticity (a measure of the material's stiffness) of 190,000 to 210,000 MPa; a rope core of several twisted wires is more flexible than a single wire. Nickel (8,900 kg/m³) is often used as the outer layer because of its very high corrosion resistance.

Frequently asked questions

What do figures such as .010 to .044 mean?

They are the string diameters in inches, from the thinnest to the thickest string in the set. The JS110 has six values from .010 to .044.

Why does it sound brighter when I pluck near the bridge?

Plucked near the bridge, only very high partials drop out of the spectrum, so the high components remain.
