In practice
- A little liquid is enough. It is not poured on but worked in with the cloth.
- Do not use on open cracks, losses or retouching. Such areas belong in the workshop.
- With unknown or delicate varnish, test on a hidden area first.
How to use
- Shake before each use.
- Put a small amount on a soft cloth.
- Work into the body and gently lift the dirt.
- Leave no excess liquid standing, work through until dry.
How it works
The varnish of a string instrument is built up in layers of ground varnish, colour varnish and top varnish, which in our workshop we finally polish to a high gloss.
All violins from our house carry spirit varnish. Small varnish defects are touched up with shellac or spirit-based retouching varnish, for example Herdim retouching varnish. A professional varnish repair does not change the sound.
Our experience
With an unfamiliar or unknown varnish we like to involve a violin maker before the first treatment. A flaw is closed most beautifully with retouching varnish by an experienced workshop, which we are glad to recommend for the purpose.
