Features
- Hidersine, founded in London in 1890 by Francis Hider, a pharmacist and double bass player
In practice
- Hidersol is a hazardous substance. It contains 10 to 25 percent turpentine oil, is flammable, harmful by inhalation, ingestion and skin contact, and may cause skin sensitisation.
- Keep away from ignition sources, store cool and ventilated, keep out of reach of children. The safety data sheet is available in German.
- With unknown or delicate varnish, test on a hidden area first and never use on open cracks or retouching.
How to use
- Apply sparingly to a soft cloth, not directly to the instrument.
- Work in small sections and polish dry afterwards.
How it works
The varnish of a string instrument is built up in layers of ground varnish, colour varnish and top varnish, which in our workshop we finally polish to a high gloss.
All violins from our house carry spirit varnish. Small varnish defects are touched up with shellac or spirit-based retouching varnish, for example Herdim retouching varnish. A professional varnish repair does not change the sound.
Our experience
With an unfamiliar or unknown varnish we like to involve a violin maker before the first treatment. A flaw is closed most beautifully with retouching varnish by an experienced workshop, which we are glad to recommend for the purpose.
