End Pin Violin Ebony, Parisian Eye, ZN-715

End Pin Violin Ebony, Parisian Eye, ZN-715

ZN-715

End button for violin in ebony, with a Parisian eye.

  • The end button anchors the tailpiece via the tailgut and therefore takes the entire string tension.
  • We ship our instruments with the end button standing half a millimetre proud. Even well-seasoned maple continues to shrink a little; an end button fitted fully flush on delivery could come loose afterwards.

  • Version with a Parisian eye

In practice

  • On 4/4 instruments the taper of the end button is the same as that of the pegs, 1:30. The violin maker therefore works with the same tools: peg hole drill and peg reamer also fit the end button hole.
  • Before fitting, the end button is trimmed with the peg shaper so that the wall is perfectly straight; the hole is smoothed with the reamer
  • The Parisian eye is a mother-of-pearl disc additionally set in a narrow metal ring. It is a matter of finish quality, not of function.
  • Grooves, ball shape and Parisian eye are decorative variations in finish.
  • The ebony we use is not subject to CITES requirements

Sound and physics

The end button sits in the tapered end-button hole in the lower rib and, via the tailgut, carries the full longitudinal pull of the strings, a good 20 to 30 kilograms on a 4/4 violin depending on the set. Its shaft has the same taper as the peg of a 4/4 violin, 1:30, because the end-button hole and the peg hole are worked with the same reamer.

Our standard violin end buttons fit 4/4 and 3/4 instruments alike, and there are dedicated sizes for smaller violins. Ebony and rosewood are regarded as tonally neutral materials for the end button; a rosewood end button such as the ZN-713P weighs around 2 grams. The Parisian eye is an inlay of mother of pearl, as a rule from the pearl oyster Pinctada maxima.

Our experience

Our experience: the end button is not part of the tailpiece delivery; on request we match the two in wood and colour.
