Protection and climate
Our rule of thumb for string instruments is 40 to 50 per cent relative humidity at around 20 °C.
In dry air, the top of a cello can crack. A humidifier inside the instrument and slow acclimatisation after every change of location help to prevent this.
As wood moisture rises, the internal damping (energy lost within the wood) increases, so a cello can sound duller. Storage at controlled humidity keeps the damping constant.
The Performance covers are soft-shell cases made of nylon. According to its data sheet, the PERF1001S cello cover has a 15 × 17 × 5 cm accessory pocket at the front, a 73 × 10 × 9 cm bow compartment and a 34 × 38 cm music pocket at the back; outside it measures 125 × 49 × 38 cm and weighs around 2.2 kg.
Because the lid of a soft shell gives a little, a slightly deeper instrument will also fit.
An ordinary impregnation spray for Cordura and textiles protects the cover against rain, and a test on a small area first shows how the fabric reacts. If a zip runs stiffly, especially round the corners, silicone spray or a little petroleum jelly on the teeth helps.
The slider of a zip can be replaced as a spare part by the owner. Replacing a cover or a zip is carried out by BAM's production in France. A forgotten code cannot be reset on a combination lock.
Our experience
Our experience: we prefer to ship a cello in a case, because without one we have seen transport damage more often.
Frequently asked questions
Will a slightly deeper instrument fit?
Often yes, because the lid of the soft shell gives a little.
How do I protect the Cordura cover from rain?
With an ordinary impregnation spray for Cordura and textiles. Test it on a small area first.
The zip runs stiffly; what helps?
Silicone spray or a little petroleum jelly on the teeth, especially at the corners.
