Protection and climate
Our rule of thumb for string instruments is 40 to 50 per cent relative humidity at around 20 °C.
In dry air, the top of a cello can crack. A humidifier inside the instrument and slow acclimatisation after every change of location help to prevent this.
As wood moisture rises, the internal damping (energy lost within the wood) increases, so a cello can sound duller. Storage at controlled humidity keeps the damping constant.
In the Classic line, BAM builds shaped cases with an ABS shell. According to its data sheet, the 1001S cello case comes with eight soft-touch locks, a foam bed and an internal music pocket; inside it measures a 78 cm body length and 124 cm overall length with a 44 cm lower bout. Its shell is splash-proof and keeps out rain; the 1001SW version has wheels. Since the model update in autumn 2021, the black of the 1001S is a true black, and the colours are called Grenade Red, Light Grey and Black.
