- Fine tuner of the 910 series for violin
In practice
- A fine tuner belongs on any string the peg cannot regulate finely enough. With steel strings that is the rule, with gut strings the exception.
- The screw must never be wound down so far that it touches the top. When removing or fitting a fine tuner, a cloth under the tailpiece protects the varnish of the top.
- When the screw reaches its end, reset the peg and bring the fine tuner back to the middle.
Sound and physics
Wittner fine tuners adjust steel strings more finely than the peg allows, through an L-shaped lever with an adjusting screw. For the damping of the string section between bridge and tailpiece, the fine tuner's weight is what counts: the materials literature gives typical weights of around 5 grams for steel fine tuners, 4 to 5 grams for brass and around 2 grams for titanium.
With four fine tuners, a tailpiece with integrated tuners is considered acoustically more favourable than four clip-on ones.
Our experience
Our experience: lower strings only fit the Wittner 902 if their end is bent open a little; for them we have traditionally offered the nickel-plated fine tuner ZF-4605.
When another model suits you better
For the loop-end E string on the violin we recommend our Götz fine tuner, which keeps the E string on the saddle and so gives it the same afterlength as G, D and A.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a fine tuner for gut strings?
Yes, the Wittner 907 for the 1/2 and 1/4 violin is designed for gut strings.
How many fine tuners do I need?
Where needed we recommend two, for example on A and E, rather than four.
