Sound and physics

Wittner makes the ULTRA tailpieces from a Hi-Tec composite and describes them as ULTRA stable and ULTRA light. The strings rest on rounded bearing points that treat them gently and keep them from slipping. The ULTRA line carries four integrated fine tuners; the ULTRA-CLASSIC line in the classic shape takes all clip-on Wittner fine tuners for its instrument, with the full adjustment range on the English model.

On the MULTI SYSTEM versions the nylon tailgut can be adjusted by 5 millimetres, and with it the afterlength, the string section between bridge and tailpiece. On a 4/4 violin we set this afterlength to 55 millimetres in the workshop, one sixth of the 328 millimetre vibrating string length. With its four integrated fine tuners the ULTRA is considered in violin making to be acoustically more favourable than a tailpiece with four separately fitted fine tuners.
