In practice
- The medium grade is the all-rounder: enough time to align without the adhesive running away.
- Cyanoacrylate is not intended for exterior use or damp environments and has no food contact approval.
- Clean with acetone. The adhesive bonds skin and eyes instantly, so safety glasses belong at the bench.
- Cool storage at 4 to 24 degrees noticeably extends usable life. Close opened bottles tightly.
- The accelerator roughly halves the setting time. Apply it sparingly to one of the two surfaces, not to both.
Technology and workmanship
According to Franklin the Titebond instant glues (620 to 623) are the first instant glues made specifically for wood and wood-based materials. Franklin makes them in four viscosities: thin, medium, thick and gel. They also bond wood to plastic, PVC, natural rubber, ferrous metals, aluminium, porcelain and glass.
The thin glue flows into every hairline crack and handles almost like a varnish. Once cured it acts as a hard surface that can be varnished over.
Like every cyanoacrylate it cures with atmospheric moisture and grabs very quickly, which is why the bottle is always kept closed. Franklin gives a working time of around 10 to 20 seconds and a clamping time of around 30 to 60 seconds; the bond is fully cured after 8 hours. Franklin puts the shelf life at around two years, in the closed bottle, stored dry and protected from sun and frost. Franklin instructs users to avoid eye contact and, in an emergency, to rinse for 15 minutes under running water and see a doctor.
