In practice
- The advantage of the threefold adjustment: you can look for height and position separately instead of committing to a fixed shape.
- Chin rest and shoulder rest work together. With a long neck a higher chin rest can take over part of the height, so the shoulder rest need not be wound up to its limit.
- The screws are made of titanium.
- After fitting, check the clamping screws: tight enough that nothing moves, and not so tight that the rib edge is marked.
Sound and physics
The violin is held by being clamped between shoulder and chin: the chin exerts light pressure on the lower bout, and the instrument is held almost entirely by this clamping. Chin rest and shoulder rest form the two sides of this clamp. The chin rest, fixed to the lower bout with a metal bracket, serves two purposes: freedom of vibration for the top, and a secure contact between chin and instrument.
The chin rest was invented by Ludwig Spohr before 1820; at first it sat over the tailpiece, today it usually sits to the left of it. Since it became standard, the top has been left undamped by the chin and the left hand has moved more freely. The vibrations of the back are also less impeded by it.
Our experience
When choosing a chin rest, we first ask whether it should sit to the side of the tailpiece or centrally over it. For more support at the chin we recommend the Stüber.
When another model suits you better
Players with a long neck looking for a classic wooden chin rest with plenty of height are well served by the Morawetz High with its 25 mm cup height.
