The fine tuner adjusts the steel E string more finely than the peg allows, through an L-shaped lever with an adjusting screw. Our screw head measures 7.87 millimetres, and the thread is precision-cut.
In the Götz design the lever keeps the E string on the tailpiece saddle, like the G, D and A strings. The E string thus has the same afterlength as the other three, our 55 millimetres on a 4/4 violin. Our black fine tuner with gilded screw, ZF-6807G, weighs 3 grams, less than the 4 to 5 grams the materials literature gives for brass fine tuners. In the understanding of violin making it therefore damps this vibrating string section less than a heavier brass fine tuner.
It is made in Markneukirchen from brass with a steel lever, now in lead-free brass CuZn21Si3P instead of CuZn39Pb3. The ZF-6811 is fully plated in real gold, the ZF-6810 in real silver, the ZF-6807 is black and the ZF-6807G black with a gilded screw; the mechanism is the same on all. It is built for loop-end E strings.
Our experience: we deliver most of our violins with a lever fine tuner and a loop-end E string. If you would like more than one fine tuner, we recommend two, for example on A and E, rather than four. The silver-plated ZF-6810 is the same fine tuner as its siblings; in our assessment the finish makes at most minimal differences in resonance.
If you play with fine tuners on all four strings, a tailpiece with integrated fine tuners such as the Wittner ULTRA is a fine choice; the violin-making literature regards it as acoustically more favourable than four single fine tuners.
No, it is built for loop-end strings. On the A string it works if the string has a loop or a removable ball.
No, our fine tuners do not need a string protector.
The change is simplest with the tailpiece taken off. Place a cloth under the tailpiece on the top, so that a dropped fine tuner does not strike the varnish.
